Why Aren’t Younger Men Going To The Doctor? (And What It Means For His Health)Are young men going to the doctor? Apparently, not enough. New research conducted by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) has shown that only 1/3 of men under 30 have been to their doctor over the course of the past year. Compare that to 85% of men in their 60s or older and you realize the mind-set of a 25-year-old is obviously not the same as a man in his 60s. But is this really a surprise? Probably not. In my 20s, I probably had 3 routine physicals through out the course of the decade (really can remember only two visits, but there must have been another one in there at some point). The research does go on to state a couple of the more common reasons for not going to the doctor– not having health insurance and just not needing to go. But is this right? Absolutely not. Common sense and now research dictates what we do at an earlier age clearly influences our health as we get older. Poor dietary habits and lack of exercise in your teens and 20s can lead to along with one’s genetic predisposition diabetes, cardiovascular disease and a slew of other health conditions. That is why doctor appointments in our 20s are so important as they serve as opportunities to monitor for early precursors of disease and reminders that we are not invincible even though we may feel otherwise. For me, there is some irony in reading these results. Just the other day, I mentioned to a 20-year-old that this would be the last physical with me (his pediatrician) as it was time to move on to an “adult doctor” (AKA internist or family medicine physician). And at that exact moment, I did wonder when the next time would be when he would see a doctor for just routine care.
