Therapists With Tidy Offices Are More Competent, Study SuggestsI just read an article about a study from The Journal of Counseling Psychology that concluded that psychotherapists with tidy offices are seen as more competent. The words used to describe the offices at the bottom of the rating scale were “cluttered,” “cramped,” “messy,” “uncomfortable” and “unprofessional,” he noted. “These results suggest that someone visiting a therapist in a low-rated office for the first time may not want to come back,” he explained. “I would tell therapists to keep their offices soft and friendly looking. Put up your diplomas and personalize the office. Arrange everything in a neat and orderly way and keep it that way.” I can’t tell you how many times I hear stories about people choosing a therapist based on information that has nothing to do with the skill level of the clinician such as suggested above. On more than one occasion potential clients have scheduled appointments with me based on my fee alone. The shared perspective is, “you get what you pay for.” In fact, I have actually had potential clients say that to me. While this might be true for things like tires and organic blueberries it’s not true when it comes to therapists. I am bringing this up hopefully for those who need a therapist but think they can’t afford to get a really good one. There is absolutely no correlation. You are just as likely to find a good therapist who works on a sliding scale as one who charges $300 an hour. What you should focus on when choosing a therapist is a therapist’s background and training as well as if you feel like they are a good fit for you. You should also feel that the fee set is affordable to your budget. Going into debt because you are seeing a therapist that you cannot afford will only create more problems. And by the way, therapists with messy offices are not any less competent than therapists who keep their offices tidy!
