Study Suggests Sex Gets Better With AgeAs people age their sex life slows down – or so it is believed. It is true that life’s responsibilities and decrease in energy can take a toll on libido. New York Times bestselling author and sexuality counselor, Ian Kerner, writes about his own life that, “As a busy dad of two young sons, I have to admit that it’s hard to keep sex high on the list of priorities: My wife and I will often opt to hit the hay rather than tumble in it.” That is a sentiment shared by many parents raising young children. It turns out that when it comes to setting the stage for romance, stage of life matters. According to a Study in the 2008 November issue of Psychological Science, sex may actually improve with age. People have more time to devote to one another and often have more disposable income to travel or spend on leisure activities. These are things that definitely help light the fire and increase the likelihood that couples will be more relaxed and better able to enjoy being intimate. Even the biological processes that occur with age can be a benefit. As women age it takes longer for them to become aroused which can extend the amount of time couples spend during foreplay. Simultaneously, older men take longer to become fully erect but in exchange are able to have better control. As Ian Kerner explains, men’s testosterone levels decrease and estrogen levels rise which can cause many older men to invoke the more tender side of their sexuality. Older couples may be less self conscious and more familiar with each other’s bodies so more likely to experiment. According to Ian Kerner it is important for older couples to realize that the slower pace of arousal does not mean that their partner has lost interest or is not turned on. It simply means that the process will look different than it did in the early years. In this case different may even be better. So if you are in a less than heated sexual period of your life, due to family or career obligations, don’t make the mistake of writing off that part of who you are so fast and don’t buy into all the hype that as you age the light goes out in the bedroom. It may take a bit more effort but you just might be in for some exciting years ahead!
