Postpartum Depression Symptoms and Effect on a Child’s Early AttachmentPostpartum depression is a biological illness caused by changes in brain chemistry following the birth of a baby. Postpartum depression occurs because of the changes in hormonal levels that happen during pregnancy and after delivery. Postpartum depression can begin any time within the baby’s first year and affects 13% of mothers. It can become chronic if not diagnosed and treated early on. 50%-75% of women who have it will also develop postpartum depression in subsequent births. The symptoms are: Insomnia This is different from the baby blues which only lasts 2-3 weeks. Postpartum depression can last up to a year Attachment Theory: The importance of attachment Postpartum depression is harmful to the baby because according to John Bowlby, “We are biologically programmed to form attachments. We come into the world seeking the proximity of a primary figure in the service of satisfying both our physical and psychological survival needs.” The mother or the caregiver is the secure base which gives comfort to the infant. Early attachment is so essential to the infant because it creates a template for all other relationships throughout life. A long period of intense emotional involvement that is harmonious with the baby’s movements is essential for the baby’s emotional health. If the mother is depressed and her attitude is detached or unmindful of the babies needs, this can cause in the child cognitive delays, social emotional deficits, depression, and anxiety. As Donald Winnicott put it, “It is the sensitivity of the mother’s responsiveness that puts language to the infant’s feelings and gives meaning to the infant’s experience.” Since attachment is such a crucial element to development it is important to notice in ourselves and others whether postpartum depression is present and get help early on. There are many groups now and individual therapies to treat this disorder. I believe Emotionally Focused Therapy is one of the best postpartum depression treatments since it deals with the whole family system. Interpersonal Psychotherapy is also helpful with postpartum depression.
