1. Corn Syrup is bad, but sugar is fine. Yeah, I drink iced tea all day, but I use real sugar. No big deal, right? The startling news is that the average American consumes 135 pounds of sugar a year. That’s a whopping number of calories that can lead to obesity and many serious health issues. So try and stick to enjoying sugar in your favorite foods, like strawberries and snap peas.

2. Need Vitamin D? Just get a nice, healthy tan. This is a sneaky one, because a moderate amount of sun is a great way to get enough vitamin D. But too much sunlight can cause skin cancer. So what’s the answer if you just want a savage tan? Either embrace your natural tone, or use sunless tanning cream!

3. Feed a cold, starve a fever. It has such a good, old-fashioned ring to it. And who doesn’t want to get better faster? The truth is you need the nutrition food brings whether you have a cold or a fever. But extra food won’t heal you faster, and starving yourself isn’t the answer. So how about having some tea and hot soup, and then snuggling on down for a nice, healing nap.

4. If you have a strong chest ache, or headache for several days, just take pain reliever. Pain is your body’s way of saying something is wrong. And although pain relievers can be essential in helping you get the rest you need to get better, they can also mask real problems by hiding the pain. Listen to your body, get the help you need, and lead a long, happy life.

5. Buying food because the package says it’s “Natural.” Now that’s a word that hits the spot, and marketers know it. And yet it can legally be used in surprising ways. Chicken and beef can be labeled natural and still contain hormones and antibiotics, for instance. So be a savvy shopper, and get what you really want.

6. Drink as much water as you can every day. For decades we’ve been told to make sure we drink enough water. Well it turns out that even with water, moderation is the way to go. Drinking 8, 8 ounce glasses is not supported by scientific evidence. And drinking too much water can cause hyponatremia, or water intoxication, a serious condition where your sodium levels begin to drop. Luckily it’s not hard to stay safe by following the recommendations for your body mass and level of activity. So have another swig and stay healthy and hydrated!
